It's not necessary to have instruments to enjoy music. There are so many things we can recycle at home to create instruments or just use everyday items in your home! Here are a few to get you started! Some are used in our sessions, so join us and leave the gathering of supplies to us!
* Pots & Pans band: Take out those pots and pans and some spoons to create drums. Experiment with different types of spoons to make different sounds. Also, experiment to make different sounds based on where you tap the pots and pans.
* Symbols: Prepare for some loud noise when you use the lids to the pots and pans to make cymbol sounds!
* Shakers: There are so many ways to make shakers! Fold a paper plate in half and seal closed with staples. Before you go all the way around, put some beans, buttons, or dry cereal inside. Cover the staples with tape for safety. Decorate the paper plate and shake, shake, shake! (Check out my Facebook page for a video clip of me demonstrating this and other homemade instrument ideas on WBRE PA Live!)
Remember to expose your child to all types of music! We have all types of music at our fingertips with cable radio stations on our television. Play a different type each day and dance to the music! What types do your children seem to like best?
